Lucas Radebe backs Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng for move abroad

Mofokeng, just 20 years old, has emerged as one of the country's brightest prospects, having enjoyed two strong seasons in the DStv Premiership with the Buccaneers.

His performances haven't only impressed locally - he also made a name for himself on the continental stage during Pirates' run to the CAF Champions League semi-finals this past season.

The youngster's rise has reportedly caught the attention of several clubs outside South Africa, with the latest being a club in Israel, sparking renewed debate around whether it's the right time for him to leave the PSL.

Radebe, a former Bafana Bafana captain and Premier League stalwart at Leeds United, says the time is now.

"I think he's ready (to go to Europe). You don't need five or ten seasons in the PSL to be ready. He's had two great seasons already. That's enough to show his potential. From here, it's all about development - and that's where Europe can play a big role," Radebe told iDiski Times.

Known for his leadership and success overseas, Radebe has long advocated for South African players to test themselves in stronger leagues at a younger age. Reflecting on past stars who stayed too long in domestic football, he lamented missed opportunities.

"Players like Siphiwe Tshabalala, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, and even Itumeleng Khune - they all had the quality to play abroad earlier," Radebe added.

"But staying at one club or in the PSL too long doesn't always help their growth. That's why I believe our top talents must go as young as they can. Relebohile is at that stage now."

Mofokeng's game is marked by composure beyond his years, creativity in tight spaces, and an eye for goal - qualities that have already earned him Bafana Bafana recognition and strong fan support at Orlando Pirates.

With growing interest from European and Middle Eastern clubs, the decision now lies with Mofokeng and his representatives. But with the backing of a respected figure like Radebe, there is strong belief that the youngster is equipped - mentally and technically - to succeed abroad.
