Mikel Arteta praises Diego Simeone ahead of Arsenal-Atletico meeting

Speaking to the media before the match, Arteta said he "looks up to" Simeone and considers the Argentine coach an inspiration due to his longevity and success with the Spanish club.

Simeone has been in charge of Atletico since December 2011, making him one of the longest-serving managers in European football. His nearly 14-year tenure significantly exceeds that of Arteta, who took over at Arsenal in December 2019 and is currently the second-longest serving manager in the Premier League, behind Manchester City's Pep Guardiola.

"Obviously, he is someone that I look up to and have learned from in many situations," Arteta said. "What he has done since he got to Atletico has been outstanding - not only what he has achieved but the way he has done it."

Under Simeone, Atletico have won two La Liga titles, two Europa Leagues, a Copa del Rey, and two UEFA Super Cups. They also reached the Champions League final twice, in 2014 and 2016.

Arteta highlighted Simeone's ability to maintain motivation and competitiveness over a long period, particularly with many of the same players.

"For how long he's been at the same club with the same players, to still transmit that energy and willingness to win - you have to be extraordinary to do that," said the Gunners tactician.

When asked whether Simeone could succeed in the Premier League, Arteta was confident.

"If he works in the Champions League, which is the highest competition in Europe, he can do it anywhere," he said. "His know-how, his character, and his willingness will take him wherever he wants."

Arsenal go into the match with a perfect start in Group B, having won both of their opening fixtures without conceding a goal. Atletico, who lost 3-2 to Liverpool in their opening game, responded with a 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Arteta acknowledged the challenge posed by the Spanish side, noting their well-known defensive discipline and fighting spirit.

"The level of organisation is really high, the level of discipline is really high," he said. "They have acquired talent over the years that fits their style very well, and they are excellent at exploiting the strengths of their squad."

The match will be the first meeting between Arteta and Simeone as managers in European competition.
