Newcastle sweep aside Benfica in commanding Champions League display

The result not only boosts Newcastle's hopes of reaching the knockout stages but also marks their first back-to-back victories in the competition in 22 years.

It was a night where two names stood out above the rest: Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes. The former continued his electric form in Europe, while the latter came off the bench to deliver a clinical double that sealed the points for Eddie Howe's side.

From the outset, Gordon looked lively and determined. The winger, who has now scored four times in just three Champions League appearances this season, opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. The goal came after Newcastle punished Benfica for a sloppy turnover while trying to counter. Bruno Guimaraes played a slick pass to Jacob Murphy down the right, and his low cross across the six-yard box found Gordon unmarked at the back post. The finish was composed and clinical - exactly what's becoming expected from Gordon this season.

Though Benfica had started brightly - with Dodi Lukebakio hitting the post and drawing a strong save from Nick Pope - the Magpies' opener shifted the momentum decisively.

If Gordon laid the foundation, it was Barnes who put the match beyond doubt. Introduced in the 63rd minute in place of Murphy, Barnes made an instant impact, showing pace, composure, and ruthless finishing.

His first goal, coming just eight minutes after coming on, was set in motion by an unlikely assist - a massive 65-yard throw from Pope that caught Benfica's defense off guard. Antonio Silva failed to deal with the bounce, and Barnes charged through before driving a low shot in off the far post.

Thirteen minutes later, he struck again. This time it was Gordon turning provider, threading a pass through a tiring Benfica backline. Barnes slid the ball calmly under goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin to make it 3-0 and wrap up a famous win.
