According to Soccernet.ng, Onyeka was forced off during Coventry City's 5-0 defeat to Brighton on Sunday, raising doubts over his availability for Nigeria's upcoming matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Chelle is expected to finalise his squad for the qualifiers soon, but the coach already has several fitness concerns to consider. Tochukwu Nnadi and Victor Osimhen are both expected to miss the upcoming matches due to injury, while Onyeka's latest setback could further weaken the Super Eagles' options.
Onyeka started for Coventry and produced a solid display in midfield before his afternoon was cut short in the 73rd minute. The Nigerian appeared to hurt his wrist after being pushed to the ground by an opponent and was visibly uncomfortable as he received treatment.
He was eventually substituted, with the full extent of the injury yet to be confirmed. Further medical assessments are expected to determine whether the midfielder will be fit for international duty.
The 28-year-old has remained an important player for Chelle since he took charge of the Super Eagles. Although Onyeka has not always been an automatic starter, his energy, defensive discipline and ability to cover ground have made him a trusted option in midfield.
His potential absence would therefore be another blow for Chelle, particularly with Nnadi already unavailable.
Alhassan Yusuf could emerge as the most obvious replacement should Onyeka fail to recover in time. The midfielder impressed during Nigeria's Unity Cup campaign earlier this year and offers Chelle another option in the middle of the park.
However, with the qualifiers approaching, the Super Eagles coach will be hoping Onyeka's injury is not serious.
