Orlando Pirates' tactical evolution behind Relebohile Mofokeng's rise, says Mandla Ncikazi

Pirates continue their preparations for Saturday's high-stakes Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium, where a win would strengthen their push at the top of the table in a tight title race involving Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mofokeng has been one of the standout performers in Pirates' strong second-half surge, scoring seven goals and providing three assists in his last five matches.

However, Ncikazi insists the midfielder's form is not just about individual brilliance, but also about how the team has been structured to maximise his strengths.

"It's not just one thing," Ncikazi explained. "It's the work done in training, the preparation, and how we've adjusted roles within the team. He is now used in multiple attacking positions, not just one fixed role."

According to Ncikazi, Pirates' tactical adjustments have been key in unlocking Mofokeng's creativity and end product, particularly in how quickly the team transitions into attacking areas.

"We get into the opponent's half faster now, and that allows him more freedom in dangerous spaces," he said.

"It's about collective organisation as much as individual talent."

While Mofokeng's performances have drawn widespread attention, Ncikazi believes his growth is also linked to his ability to adapt to different tactical demands within matches, making him one of the most versatile young players in the squad.

The assistant coach also noted that Mofokeng's maturity allows him to execute complex tactical instructions with ease, despite his age.

"He understands the game very well for someone so young. He absorbs instructions quickly and applies them on the pitch," Ncikazi added.

With Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi still leading the team, Ncikazi stressed that leadership remains shared within the squad, with Mofokeng already playing a growing influence in key moments.

As Pirates gear up for another crucial derby, Mofokeng's role within the system could once again be central to their ambitions.
