Liverpool captain Van Dijk would 'accept' fifth-place finish this season

Speaking ahead of Saturday's clash with Crystal Palace at Anfield, the captain was clear about the team's focus.

"This has not been the season we all wanted," Van Dijk said. "But the aim now is to finish strongly, and that means Champions League qualification. Nothing else will do."

Liverpool go into the match knowing a win would strengthen their grip on a top-five spot. Van Dijk admitted it falls short of pre-season expectations but insisted the target is now non-negotiable.

"It's not what we had in mind at the start," he said. "But it's what we are fighting for now. We have to deliver and get the three points."

The defender also reflected on last weekend's dramatic derby win over Everton, praising both the performance and the supporters.

"There is no better feeling than winning a Merseyside derby," he said. "Doing it away from home and so late made it even more special. It felt important."

Liverpool's preparations have been disrupted by injuries. Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is ruled out after suffering a serious leg wound, while Alisson Becker is close to returning.

Head coach Arne Slot said: "Ali is close to returning to play, but we will decide if this game comes too soon."

Defenders Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni, along with midfielder Wataru Endo, remain sidelined. Forward Hugo Ekitike is also out after undergoing surgery on an Achilles injury.

Palace, meanwhile, have been handed a boost with Adam Wharton fit again after missing their draw with West Ham United.

Manager Oliver Glasner said: "Adam is good and trained without any issues, so he will be available."

However, Palace remain without Eddie Nketiah and Evann Guessand, while Nathaniel Clyne is a doubt after illness. Midfielder Cheick Doucoure is still yet to feature this season due to injury.

With pressure mounting, Van Dijk made it clear Liverpool's objective is simple: win, and keep control of their Champions League fate.
