Gavin Hunt credits club backing for Stellenbosch revival

Hunt arrived at the club in January under difficult circumstances, taking over from Steve Barker, who departed to join Simba SC. With Stellenbosch sitting in the relegation zone at the time, the immediate task was to stabilise results and restore belief within the squad.

A few months later, the picture looks far more promising. Stellenbosch are now ninth on the table with 32 points from 25 matches, narrowly outside the top-eight places following their 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns.

While results on the pitch have improved, Hunt insists the foundation of the club's progress was laid off it.

"The backing I received from the start was crucial," Hunt said, highlighting the role of CEO Rob Benadie and the technical team.

"Everyone aligned with what we needed to do, and that made it easier to implement changes quickly."

Part of that shift included refreshing the squad with key additions who have brought both experience and composure. Former Sundowns players Mosa Lebusa and Asekho Tiwani have slotted in seamlessly, helping to improve balance within the team.

Hunt also emphasised the importance of adaptability, noting that his side has had to alternate between disciplined, defensive displays and more expressive football depending on the situation.

"It's about understanding what the game requires. Sometimes you manage the game, sometimes you play. The players have responded well to that," he added.

With confidence slowly returning and results following, Stellenbosch have shifted their focus from survival to ambition, with a top-eight finish now firmly within reach.

They will have another opportunity to strengthen their push when they face Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.
