Silva returned to the side at the weekend and immediately set the tone with his intensity and leadership. One moment in the second half summed him up, as he tried to wrestle Wolves players away from Gianluigi Donnarumma at a corner, refusing to give them an inch despite being outmuscled. It was scrappy, defiant and very Silva.
City have not been flawless this season and Silva's performances have divided opinion, especially after a disappointing display in the recent derby defeat. His numbers are modest, with limited goal involvements, but Guardiola continues to value what he brings beyond statistics.
The City manager was blunt when asked about Silva's importance.
"I sleep better when I decide to play him in the team and I have to take care of my health," Guardiola said. "He's a competitor and he still has fire in his eyes. Hopefully he can pass this fire on to the rest of the group."
Guardiola also highlighted Silva's mentality.
"He never makes excuses. He competes in every single game. He has played the most minutes with me in ten seasons here, and that's because he's really good," he added.
As captain, Silva has also played a key role off the pitch, helping restore standards in a squad that is becoming younger with each season. Guardiola believes that experience still matters, especially in high-pressure moments.
With crucial Premier League fixtures, Champions League ties and cup games ahead, Guardiola has already given a strong hint. When the stakes are highest, Bernardo Silva remains one of the first names on his teamsheet.
