Report: Conor Gallagher eyes Premier League comeback as Newcastle lead chase

The 25-year-old England international, who swapped Chelsea for Atletico in a 42 million euro deal last year, is reportedly open to returning to England, according to sources close to the player.

Gallagher made 50 appearances for Atletico in his debut season, scoring four goals and providing six assists, but struggled to secure a regular starting role under Diego Simeone.

He started just 19 La Liga matches and was substituted at half-time in his sole start during Atletico's FIFA Club World Cup campaign, highlighting his limited role. "Conor has settled well and is loved for his attitude, but he's not a guaranteed starter," a source close to Atletico said, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

Newcastle have shown serious interest in Gallagher, with manager Eddie Howe a long-time admirer of the midfielder's relentless energy and versatility. "Gallagher fits perfectly into Howe's plans," Mundo Deportivo noted, emphasizing his appeal as Newcastle prepare for a demanding Premier League and Champions League season.

The Magpies are reportedly readying a 36 million pound bid to secure his services, a figure that matches Atletico's valuation to avoid a loss on their investment.

Other Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, have been approached about Gallagher's availability, but Newcastle appear to be leading the race.

Gallagher himself is said to be keen on a return to England, particularly with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon. "The English midfielder has asked his entourage to explore options for a return to the Premier League," Mundo Deportivo reported, citing his desire for regular playing time to secure his spot in the England squad.

Despite his comfort in Madrid, the lack of a guaranteed role could push him to seek a new challenge.

Atletico, meanwhile, are undergoing a squad rebuild, with midfielder Rodrigo De Paul nearing a move to Inter Miami. This could open the door for Gallagher's departure as the club looks to fund new signings, such as Villarreal's Alex Baena, who can play in Gallagher's position.

Newcastle's interest comes at a pivotal time, with a friendly against Atletico scheduled for August 9 at St James' Park as part of the Sela Cup. "The match on August 9 could be his last appearance as a mattress maker," Fichajes.net reported, hinting at the possibility of a transfer before the season starts.

While no deal is imminent, Gallagher's potential return to the Premier League has sparked excitement among Newcastle fans. "Conor Gallagher would be a very shrewd piece of business," one supporter posted on X, with another calling him "an absolute phenomenal replacement" for Sean Longstaff, should the latter depart.

For now, Gallagher is on holiday, spotted at Wimbledon earlier this month, and is set to rejoin Atletico for pre-season on July 21. However, with Newcastle and other Premier League clubs circling, the midfielder's future remains one to watch as the transfer window heats up.
