Paul Mitchell to depart Newcastle as sporting director
In a surprising development, Paul Mitchell will step down as sporting director of Newcastle United next month, the club has confirmed.
The Magpies are in the market for fresh attacking options as they prepare for life without Callum Wilson, who is expected to depart the club imminently.
Pedro is reportedly on Eddie Howe's shortlist, with the Newcastle boss open to pairing him alongside Alexander Isak in a new-look forward line. The club also see Pedro as a valuable backup to Isak as they look to bolster squad depth ahead of next season.
The news comes via former Manchester United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who is known to be well-connected in football circles.
Brown exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Newcastle have a strong interest in signing the Brazilian this summer.
Joao Pedro, who joined Brighton from Watford, is believed to be open to the move. With Brighton missing out on European qualification following Crystal Palace's FA Cup triumph, Pedro is said to be attracted by the prospect of joining a club with European ambitions.
Newcastle, who have been pushing to establish themselves as a top-six Premier League side, offer a potential step up and the chance to feature in continental competitions.
