Arsenal edge Manchester United in Premier League opener at Old Trafford
Arsenal kicked off their new Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The 25-year-old, who returned to Old Trafford after a disappointing loan at Chelsea, has been informed he can depart, with Roma emerging as frontrunners following their proposal submitted on Thursday.
The Italian outfit, managed by Gian Piero Gasperini and owned by The Friedkin Group, who also control Everton, have offered 20 million pounds for a permanent transfer, though they remain open to a loan with a buy clause.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, "AS Roma submit official bid to Manchester United to sign Jadon Sancho. Permanent move for 20 million pounds offered while club's also open to loan with buy clause. Decision up to Manchester United and Sancho’s camp."
Recent updates indicate positive momentum, with journalist Alfredo Pedulla reporting that "in the afternoon there was direct contact between Roma and Jadon Sancho who has completely opened up to the transfer. Now it’s necessary to finalize to avoid interventions, and Roma is working on it."
Roma hope to reignite the flair Sancho displayed during his Borussia Dortmund days, where he notched 50 goals and 64 assists across four seasons, prompting United to splash 73 million pounds on him in 2021 alongside a five-year contract worth 250,000 pounds per week.
However, a string of managers at United struggled to unlock his potential, peaking with a public fallout involving Erik ten Hag that sidelined him.
In August 2024, Chelsea secured a loan with an obligation to buy, but Sancho's modest haul of five goals in 41 appearances led the Blues to pay a five million pounds penalty to avoid a permanent deal. Now back at United, whose contract with Sancho expires next summer, the Red Devils are unlikely to favor a straight loan to prevent losing him for free, though shedding his wages would provide relief.
United have deemed Sancho surplus, one of five players told they lack a future this summer. So far, only Marcus Rashford has departed. Alejandro Garnacho has drawn interest from Chelsea, but their 30 million pounds valuation falls 20 million pounds short of United's demands.
Antony, meanwhile, has been linked with a late-window push to Real Betis, and Tyrell Malacia awaits his next step.
Should the Roma move materialize, it could mark a fresh chapter for Sancho in Italy, where the Giallorossi aim to harness his early Bundesliga magic amid competition from other suitors like Besiktas.
As talks progress, United fans will watch closely to see if this bid sparks a swift resolution.
