According to ANSA, Mancini is expected to take charge of the Azzurri once the final paperwork has been signed. Malago revealed that only the coach's signature is needed before the appointment is officially announced.
"I am talking with Roberto Mancini to make him the new head coach: we are just waiting for the signature," Malago said.
The Italian Football Federation is also expected to confirm the appointment of Claudio Ranieri as technical director, with the experienced coach set to help shape the future of the national team alongside Mancini.
Mancini would return to the Italy job less than three years after his shock resignation in August 2023, when he left the Azzurri to take charge of Saudi Arabia.
His time in Riyadh failed to produce the results both sides had hoped for. In 21 matches, Saudi Arabia won nine games, drew seven and lost five under the 61-year-old before his spell came to an end.
Despite that setback, Mancini remains one of the most respected figures in world football. As both a player and manager, he has built a reputation for transforming teams and ending long waits for major honours.
As a coach, he guided Italy to the Euro 2020 title, ended Manchester City's 44-year wait for the English league title by winning the Premier League in 2012, and helped Sampdoria claim their only Serie A championship in 1991 during his outstanding playing career. Those achievements have cemented his reputation as a winner capable of rebuilding teams and delivering silverware.
