Stanley Nwabali's agent explains why he went back to Chippa United

The Betway Premiership side confirmed the Super Eagles goalkeeper's return on Saturday, five months after he surprisingly parted ways with the Eastern Cape club by mutual agreement.

At the time of his departure in February, neither his representative Mohammed Lawal nor the Chilli Boys disclosed the reasons behind the split. The goalkeeper only hinted that the decision was necessary for his happiness and well-being.

However, Lawal has now explained that Nwabali's exit had nothing to do with problems at Chippa or interest from other clubs. Instead, the goalkeeper needed time away from football after losing three close family members within a short period.

Speaking to ESPN, Lawal revealed that Nwabali was emotionally overwhelmed following the deaths of his grandmother, father, Godspower Nwabali, and later his mother, Grace Nwabali.

According to Lawal, those close to the goalkeeper urged him not to make permanent decisions while grieving.

"We told him, 'This isn't you. Take time away before you do permanent damage to your career,'" Lawal said.

Lawal added that stepping away from football gave Nwabali the opportunity to process his grief and avoid making a decision he could later regret.

The representative also dismissed suggestions that the goalkeeper's departure was linked to unhappiness at Chippa, stressing that the club remained supportive throughout the difficult period.

Nwabali had previously described leaving the club as one of the toughest decisions of his career, saying football should be enjoyed and that personal happiness had to come first.

His return now signals a fresh start, with Lawal believing the goalkeeper is mentally ready to resume his career after taking the time he needed to heal.

Nwabali, who rose to prominence with his outstanding performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), will now look to rediscover his best form as he begins his second spell with the Eastern Cape outfit.
