Tom Saintfiet praises Mali after narrow AFCON quarter-final exit

Tom Saintfiet praises Mali after narrow AFCON quarter-final exit

Despite being reduced to ten men for large portions of the contest following the red card of Yves Bissouma, Mali pushed the defending champions all the way in a tightly fought encounter, earning praise from their coach for a performance that reflected the team's character throughout the tournament.

"It was an interesting and difficult match for us because we had to play large parts of the game with ten men," Saintfiet told CAF

"But that doesn't take away from the fact that my players played gallantly and played very well."

The Belgian tactician emphasised that his pride extended beyond the result on the night, highlighting Mali's overall progress and competitiveness during the competition.

"I am proud of them for the performance they put up, not just in today's match but throughout the competition," he added.

"We have shown the world what we are made of."

While Mali's AFCON campaign comes to an end, Saintfiet stressed that the experience gained will serve as a foundation for future improvement. He confirmed that the coaching staff will conduct a thorough review of the team's performances with an eye on long-term growth.

"Together with my staff, we will analyse our matches and see what we can do better in the future," he said.

Senegal, meanwhile, continue their defence of the continental crown and will now turn their attention to the semi-finals, where they will face the winner of Saturday's heavyweight clash between record champions Egypt and reigning title holders Ivory Coast.

For Mali, the exit may be disappointing, but their resilient display ensured they leave the tournament with heads held high and renewed belief for the challenges ahead.
