Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Hoeness said the winger had suffered another problem in an area that has already troubled him this season.
"Tiago has muscle issues," Hoeness said. "There's a small structural problem, so he will not be available for now."
Hoeness made it clear Stuttgart will take a cautious approach with the Portuguese forward, who has struggled with the same injury before.
"Since it's the same spot, we will proceed more carefully. It has to heal properly," he added. "It will be weeks before he is available again."
Tomas's absence is a blow for Stuttgart as they prepare to host Borussia Dortmund tonight, with both sides pushing for European qualification in the Bundesliga. The winger has been an important option in attack when fit, offering pace and directness out wide.
There was, however, some positive news for Stuttgart supporters. Ermedin Demirovic is fit and available again after a long injury lay-off and could feature against Dortmund.
"Ermedin is feeling good and played 45 minutes in the friendly," Hoeness said. "He's physically fit, even though he hasn't played for four months. He's immediately an option for me and is very important for us."
Stuttgart will be hoping Demirovic's return can help offset the loss of Tomas as they take on a Dortmund side sitting near the top of the table. With a demanding run of fixtures ahead, Hoeness will be looking for his squad to manage injuries carefully while staying competitive in the race for European places.
