West Indies spin attack stuns England to seal T20 World Cup win

West Indies spin attack stuns England to seal T20 World Cup win

Sherfane Rutherford struck an unbeaten 76 from 42 balls to guide West Indies to 196-6 at the Wankhede Stadium. Gudakesh Motie then starred with 3-33, while Roston Chase claimed 2-29 as England were bowled out for 166 in 19 overs.

England made a rapid start chasing 197, with Phil Salt smashing 30 from 14 balls as they surged to 67-1 in the powerplay. However, the introduction of spin turned the match.

Chase removed Jos Buttler for 21 before Motie dismissed Tom Banton (2), Jacob Bethell (33) and Brook (17) in a decisive spell that reduced England to 131-5. Will Jacks also fell cheaply as England's middle order collapsed.

Sam Curran offered late resistance with an unbeaten 43 but ran out of partners when Adil Rashid was caught in the penultimate over.

Earlier, West Indies recovered after slipping to 8-2, with Jofra Archer removing Shai Hope in the opening over and Brandon King falling soon after. England continued to take wickets, with Rashid producing an excellent 2-16 to claim his 400th T20 wicket.

However, Rutherford revived the innings with a powerful display, sharing key partnerships with Rovman Powell and Jason Holder, who scored 33 from 17 balls. Their late hitting pushed West Indies to a competitive total that proved beyond England.

The defeat leaves England needing wins against Scotland and Italy to likely reach the Super Eights, while West Indies remain unbeaten and top of the group.
