World Cup-bound Olwethu Makhanya sets the scene for Bafana’s Mexico showdown

World Cup-bound Olwethu Makhanya sets the scene for Bafana’s Mexico showdown

South Africa have been drawn against the tournament co-hosts as well as South Korea and the Czech Republic in a strong Group A.

Makhanya made the cut for Hugo Broos' final 26-man squad for the global showpiece despite yet to feature for the national side.

He was rewarded for his performances for Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union.

Makhanya has plenty of experience of the Azteca Stadium, having played their most recently in a 1-1 draw with Club America in March in a CONCACAF Champions Cup last 16 encounter.

Speaking ahead of the friendly warm-up with Nicaragua at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday, Makhanya explained that Bafana will need to be ready for an intense atmosphere.

"Playing in the MLS gives me an opportunity to compete with Mexican teams in Concacaf," said Makhanya in the Citizen.

"I know a lot about what to expect from the fans and the teams. They fight for everything. They are not the biggest but they compete to the last whistle.

"And they play mental games to get in your head. If we can stay focused mentally, we should be fine. This (Bafana) team has all the qualities to go out there and win.

"With the atmosphere in the stadium, the fans are really passionate," he added.

"They are going to go crazy and support their team throughout the game."

"It is an honour for me and for my family to be able to represent the national team," the player added.
