The five biggest names who failed to qualify for the 2025 Open Championship
Final Qualifying for this month's Open Championship at Royal Portrush produced its usual twists, turns and tales of drama.
The 20-year-old's maiden PGA Tour win two weeks ago vaulted him up the Official World Golf Ranking, making him one of the top six players not already exempt for the year's final major.
Ranked 123rd at the time of his win, Potgieter's rise came at just the right moment, as The Open filled the final six spots in its 156-man field using this week's world rankings.
Potgieter will be joined by fellow alternate Brian Campbell, who booked his place with a win at the John Deere Classic on Sunday. Nico Echavarria, Michael Kim, Bud Cauley, and Davis Thompson also made the cut, with Thompson narrowly edging out Si Woo Kim for the last spot.
Potgieter has one previous appearance at The Open, qualifying for the tournament in 2022 after his impressive victory in the Amateur Championship as a 17-year-old.
He missed the cut at St Andrews three years ago but will have another chance to take on golf's oldest major when this year's Open tees off at Royal Portrush on July 17.
