Cameron Young leads weather-affected Wyndham Championship heading into weekend
Cameron Young held a one-shot lead with three holes remaining when play was suspended Friday at the weather-disrupted Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.
The American carded a five under 65 around Sedfield Country Club on Saturday, enough to move him to 20 under for the tournament, five shots ahead of Nico Echavarria.
Young went on a birdie blitz on the front nine, rolling in four consecutive gains, including draining a 30-footer on the fourth. He’d gone 39 straight holes without a bogey until missing a six-foot sliding par putt on the 14th hole, but he bounced back with gains on the 15th and 17th.
"Just played some really nice golf there for about an hour," the 29-year-old told AP.
"Had some opportunities on the back nine, too, just didn't make as many putts. But kind of cruised along with hitting some average shots through the middle of the round, and nice to finish up the way I did."
Young is considered one of the better players to have never tasted PGA Tour success. The New Yorker has no less than seven runner-up finishes to his name. Now, he needs to go one better.
"I finished second a bunch, I've gotten beat a lot," he added.
"I've played some good golf on Sunday in really all those cases. So that's all I'm trying to do tomorrow. I'm starting in a nice spot, so I'm just looking to try to beat second place by as many as I can."
Colombia's Echavarria signed for a 64 on Saturday, while defending champion Aaron Rai (69), Chris Kirk (67) and Mac Meissner (70) were tied for third on 12 under, eight shots back.
