Sven Botman injury adds to Newcastle's pre-season woes
Newcastle defender Sven Botman has been ruled out of Wednesday's pre-season friendly against Team K-League in Suwon due to a groin injury sustained against Arsenal on Sunday.
The 33-year-old, whose contract at St James' Park expires in the summer of 2026, could be available should Newcastle secure a deal for Aaron Ramsdale.
The Magpies are actively pursuing Ramsdale, with manager Eddie Howe eager to reunite with the England international, having previously coached him at Bournemouth.
However, Newcastle's bid to land Ramsdale on loan has hit a stumbling block, as Southampton - his current club - are demanding a significant loan fee.
Ramsdale, who is eager to regain a first-choice Premier League role to boost his England prospects ahead of the 2026 World Cup, is keen on the move.
Should Newcastle succeed, it would place Pope's starting role under serious threat, potentially opening the door for his departure.
Manchester United see Pope as an experienced and reliable shot-stopper who fits the profile to provide genuine competition for Onana. With just one year left on his deal and his status at Newcastle uncertain, Pope could represent a smart and cost-effective addition.
Earlier this off-season, Leeds United were also linked with Pope but have since turned their attention elsewhere, completing the signing of Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Perri from Lyon.
