Sven Botman injury adds to Newcastle's pre-season woes

The 25-year-old centre-back was forced off just 25 minutes into his second-half appearance, prompting fears of another significant setback in what has already been a dreadful off-season for Eddie Howe's side. However, the injury is not believed to be serious.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Newcastle manager Howe confirmed Botman's absence for the upcoming fixture

There remains a slight possibility that Botman could return in time for Sunday's clash against Tottenham Hotspur, though no firm decision has been made. Newcastle remain hopeful he will be fit enough to take part in at least one match of the Sela Cup double-header the following weekend.

The Magpies are set to face La Liga duo Espanyol and Atletico Madrid in the Sela Cup, and the club's medical staff are working to ensure Botman can play some part as preparations intensify ahead of the Premier League season.

"We didn't think it was a serious injury and we've had that confirmed with a scan," said Howe.

"He won't play tomorrow. He could play against Tottenham, but possibly not. We hope he'll be available for the double header."

Botman's setback is yet another blow in a testing summer for Newcastle, with injuries and inconsistent performances hindering their progress during the pre-season tour of Asia.
