Abdoulaye Mariko vows to honour Orlando Pirates legacy

The talented 23-year-old midfielder joined the Buccaneers from Malian Premiere Division side Djoliba FC in the off-season.

He made his debut off the bench for his new club in the 2-0 MTN8 victory over Polokwane City at the weekend, coming on for Sipho Mbule with 20 minutes of the match remaining.

Mariko is expected to be involved again when Pirates take on Sekhukhune United at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday in their first game of the new Betway Premiership season.

Speaking after his debut, Mariko told the club's website: "Wearing the Pirates jersey for the first time felt like a dream come true. I knew I was representing a club with great history, pride, and passionate supporters – I felt a deep responsibility to give my best."

The Malian added that joining Pirates is a dream come true after working hard all his life to become a professional footballer.

"Football has always played a big role in my life – from street games to training academies – I've always chased this dream," he explained.

"Joining Djoliba was a major step in my career. It's one of the biggest clubs in Mali, and it helped me grow both technically and mentally. It was at Djoliba that I truly understood what it means to be a professional footballer.

"Playing for Orlando Pirates is more than just football, it's about representing a legacy," he added. "It means discipline, honour, and a commitment to excellence. I feel blessed to be part of such a prestigious club."
