Alexander Isak 'forever grateful' to Newcastle after record Liverpool move

The 25-year-old Swedish striker's move to Anfield ends a drawn-out saga that saw him sidelined from Newcastle's preseason and opening Premier League fixtures, as he sought a transfer. Isak, who joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 for 60 million pounds, scored 54 goals in 86 Premier League games and 27 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions last season. He played a pivotal role in helping Newcastle win the Carabao Cup in March-scoring in the 2-1 final win over Liverpool - and securing Champions League qualification by finishing fifth in the Premier League.

In a heartfelt Instagram statement, Isak wrote:

Isak's warm farewell stood in stark contrast to Newcastle's terse 37-word announcement:

"Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee. The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions," said the statement.

The brevity of Newcastle's statement was notable, especially compared to the more elaborate farewells issued by other Premier League clubs for departing players, regardless of their impact.

Isak's departure followed a period of tension. He was left out of Newcastle's preseason tour with what the club described as a "minor thigh injury," but it was widely understood he wanted to leave. He trained alone at former club Sociedad before Liverpool's initial bid was rejected. Amid ongoing speculation, Isak released a statement claiming promises had been "broken" by Newcastle and that their "relationship can't continue." Newcastle responded, saying "no commitment had ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer."

Ultimately, Isak's decision not to train or play for Newcastle this summer succeeded in forcing the move he desired, though it strained his relationship with the club and its fans. His agent, Vlado Lemic, added fuel to the fire with a cryptic comment: "It's nice when you have someone to be with, but even nicer when you know who you'll never be with again," with Newcastle blaming Lemic for advising Isak to go on strike.
