Amazon founder Jeff Bezos closing in on 30 percent Liverpool stake
The investment group is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
The consortium has been in talks with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) for several months, with a deal that could value Liverpool at around 6 billion pounds.
An announcement could come as soon as this week, although the timing could slip into next week. The deal is expected to value Liverpool at around 6 billion dollars, with the consortium reportedly investing approximately 1.35 billion pounds.
FSG confirmed last month that the group had "expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club".
Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, was previously a director and shareholder of Queens Park Rangers before relinquishing his stake in the Championship club last month.
Bezos, 62, has an estimated fortune of more than 250 billion dollars, placing him among the world's richest people. He stepped down as Amazon chief executive in 2021 and remains executive chairman, while also owning The Washington Post and aerospace company Blue Origin.
The deal would mark Bezos' first major investment in football, although he has previously explored opportunities in American sport. He was linked with potential bids for the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks but ultimately did not proceed.
FSG has owned Liverpool since completing a 300 million pounds takeover in 2010. The group has overseen two Premier League titles and sold a 3 percent stake to US investment firm Dynasty Equity in 2023.
The involvement of Bezos, Saverin and Bhatia is likely to fuel speculation over whether the consortium could eventually seek greater control of Liverpool.
For now, however, the deal remains a minority investment, with FSG continuing as the club's controlling shareholder.
