Benni McCarthy forced to settle for Kenya stalemate
Benni McCarthy is still waiting for his first win with Kenya after guiding his side to a goalless draw with Chad on Saturday.
Akumu, who featured in Kenya's recent qualifying campaign under former coach Engin Firat, was left devastated as the Harambee Stars fell short of qualification in a tough group featuring Cameroon, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
"I cried after the Zimbabwe match," Akumu admitted in an interview with Telecomasia.net.
"It was painful not to make the cut in 2019, but this time it hurt even more. I knew we had a real shot and it meant everything to me."
For Akumu, the disappointment re-opened old wounds. In 2019, he was part of the team that helped Kenya qualify for the continental showpiece but was controversially left out of the final squad for the tournament in Egypt.
Now playing his club football in Iran, the 31-year-old has shown remarkable mental strength to bounce back. His recent recall to the national team by newly appointed head coach Benni McCarthy for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers marks a potential new chapter in his international career.
Despite the heartbreak, Akumu believes the future is still bright for Kenyan football. With the country set to co-host the 2027 AFCON, he sees the current setbacks as valuable lessons on the road to redemption.
"We have a great opportunity ahead of us. Being one of the host nations in 2027 gives us a new goal to work towards. I'm determined to be part of that journey and help guide the younger players," the midfielder added.
As Kenya turns the page under McCarthy's leadership, Akumu's story stands as a symbol of perseverance—a reminder that even in the face of failure, passion and purpose can still light the path forward.
