Benni McCarthy forced to settle for Kenya stalemate
Benni McCarthy is still waiting for his first win with Kenya after guiding his side to a goalless draw with Chad on Saturday.
Kenya, who will co-host the CHAN alongside Tanzania and Uganda in August, are set to play back-to-back friendlies against Chad on Saturday, June 7, and Tuesday, June 10. These fixtures are key to preparing the squad and evaluating players.
Kimani emphasized that head coach Benni McCarthy and his technical team are keen to broaden the talent pool.
"As the coach (McCarthy) said earlier on, there is more room for players to come into the team," Kimani told Capital Sports.
"Those who have been selected this time around have a great opportunity to show the coach what they can do and stake a claim for a place in the team going forward. That does not shut the door on those who haven't been selected; the national team is always a revolving door."
Kenya's squad for the Chad friendlies features 25 locally-based players - a strategic move with the CHAN in mind. Kimani praised the players' attitude and commitment during training.
"The mood in camp is great, and every player is giving their best. They're giving us a very good headache as a technical bench on who to select. Everybody is raring to go and showing the coach why they deserve a spot in the upcoming friendly against Chad," he added.
Benni McCarthy will be aiming for his first win in charge of the Harambee Stars, having overseen a 3-3 draw with Gambia and a 2-1 loss to Gabon in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers back in March.
