Baroka's fall from grace hits Wedson Nyirenda hard

The Limpopo-based outfit, affectionately known as Bakgakga, suffered a 3-0 defeat to Kruger United, sealing their drop from the Motsepe Foundation Championship. The result capped a dramatic fall for a club that once competed among the elite in the Premier Soccer League.

Nyirenda, who guided Baroka to their historic triumph in the Telkom Knockout Cup in 2018, said the club's decline has been painful to witness.

"It is the saddest moment in my life. I received so many calls and messages from supporters and fans from South Africa," said Nyirenda, as quoted by Pan African Football.

"They complained bitterly and said if I was still there, Baroka could have been bigger than most clubs in SA. It hurts to see the project you handled and become a huge brand just go to waste like that."

Baroka's relegation marks a significant low point in their 18-year history, having once risen through the ranks to establish themselves in top-flight football. Their 2018 cup success remains the pinnacle of that journey.

Club chairman Khurishi Mphahlele had expressed optimism earlier in the season that the appointment of coach Tlisane Motaung would help the team avoid relegation, but results failed to improve.

With their fate now sealed, Baroka have three fixtures left to fulfil, starting with an away clash against Casric Stars. They will then travel to face Cape Town City FC before concluding their campaign at home against Upington City.

Baroka currently sit bottom of the standings with 19 points from 27 matches, while Kruger United lead the table with 55 points, underlining the gap that ultimately defined Bakgakga's relegation season.
