Bayern Munich's Jonathan Tah admits Germany's performance against Slovakia 'very bad'

The Bayern Munich defender fronted up following what was not only another loss, but also Germany's first-ever away defeat in a World Cup qualifier.

The match in Bratislava unravelled in familiar fashion for Julian Nagelsmann's side, who again looked short of attacking ideas and conviction.

Slovakia took the lead just before half-time when David Hancko punished a careless turnover from Florian Wirtz in the 42nd minute.

Any hopes of a German revival were extinguished shortly after the restart, with David Strelec curling a superb effort beyond Oliver Baumann in the 55th minute.

For Germany, it was a third consecutive competitive defeat, following Nations League losses to Portugal and France.

Despite boasting some of Europe's most recognisable talent, the side once famed for resilience and efficiency continues to lack cohesion in key moments. Their forward play, in particular, looked blunt and unimaginative, with chances at a premium throughout.

"We lost the ball way too easily, we didn't have control on the game," said Tah.

"It was a deserved loss and a very bad performance from us today.

"This is not our ambition and not what we expect of ourselves. We have to be honest. It's tough to explain the reasons now directly after the game. We have to do much better immediately in the next game."

The setback leaves Germany in a precarious position. To secure direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup, they may now need to win all their remaining group matches.
