Bayern stand firm on Manuel Neuer future despite fan criticism after PSG defeat

Former CEO and current Supervisory Board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge addressed the situation following a wave of fan reaction that has been described internally as overly reactionary.

"We all agree that we would very much welcome him staying for another year," said Rummenigge.

"He has won everything at FC Bayern, shaping an era for over 15 years. His performance remains at a high level."

Sections of the support have called for Neuer to be replaced by emerging option Jonas Urbig, particularly in the aftermath of Bayern's dramatic 5-4 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg on Tuesday.

Neuer's performance in Paris drew sharp scrutiny, with the 38-year-old failing to register a single save across the match - a statistic that intensified debate around his role.

However, Bayern's hierarchy remain firm in their stance that the experienced goalkeeper still has much to offer.

Rummenigge emphasised Neuer's continued value, not only on the pitch but also within the squad dynamic.

The club view him as an important mentor figure for Urbig, with part of his responsibility expected to involve guiding the younger goalkeeper's development while maintaining competition for the starting role.

"And the combination we have with him and the young Jonas Urbig is perfect," Rummenigge added.

"He can continue to support Urbig in his development. The entire goalkeeping group, including Sven Ulreich and goalkeeping coach Michael Rechner, is a united group. Therefore, it would be great if they all stayed together."
