Borussia Dortmund set to extend Julian Brandt and Emre Can deals

After months of speculation over their expiring deals, negotiations have reached an advanced stage, and both midfield figures are likely to commit to Borussia Dortmund until at least 2028, according to reports from Sport Bild.

Brandt, 29, has been a creative lynchpin for Dortmund since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019. He marked a milestone earlier in December by making his 500th senior competitive appearance, including 285 for Dortmund, and scored twice in that match.

His influence in the middle of the park has been notable this season, with several key goals and link-up play that have helped keep Dortmund competitive across Bundesliga and European fixtures.

Can, 31, has also been central to Dortmund's plans, wearing the captain's armband and leading by example in midfield. The Germany international has featured regularly this season and continues to be a steadying presence for the side.

Sport Bild reports that Dortmund and the duo have agreed terms in principle, with final signatures likely in January or February. The financial packages are understood to remain broadly similar to their current contracts, with Brandt earning around eight million pounds annually and Can slightly more.

Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has stressed the club's intent to maintain stability amid a busy campaign, saying the club "want to build around players who understand our identity and standards".

Both players have expressed satisfaction with how talks are progressing, emphasising their desire to contribute to Dortmund's ambitions in both domestic and European competitions.

Securing Brandt and Can would provide Dortmund with continuity in a squad that has seen fluctuation in form this season, and underline the club's commitment to retaining experienced leaders as they target success on multiple fronts.
