Darrel Matsheke gets another chance under Gavin Hunt at Stellenbosch

The midfielder has signed for Stellies for a second spell after previously featuring for the club during the 2023/24 season.

His return also sees him link up with Hunt again, with the pair having first worked together at Kaizer Chiefs. Hunt handed Matsheke his PSL debut during the 2020/21 campaign before the midfielder later made his way to Stellenbosch.

Matsheke enjoyed a memorable first spell in the Winelands, making 12 appearances across all competitions and helping the club secure the Carling Knockout trophy.

He became one of the key figures of that cup triumph after converting the winning penalty in the shootout against TS Galaxy in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

After leaving Stellenbosch, Matsheke went on to represent Pretoria Callies and Kruger United before making his return to the club.

Stellenbosch confirmed the move, welcoming back a player who played an important role in one of the club's recent trophy successes.

"Stellenbosch Football Club is pleased to announce that midfielder Darrel Matsheke has rejoined the Club for a second spell," said the club.

Matsheke admitted that his return came as a surprise but said he was delighted to have another opportunity at Stellenbosch.

"It feels great to be back at Stellenbosch FC.

"It was unexpected, but I am really happy to be here. I can only thank God for the opportunity, and the Club and the coach for trusting me enough to bring me back."

The midfielder is also determined to make the most of his second chance, particularly after missing out on continental football during his previous stint.

"I missed out on the opportunity to play in Africa last time, so there's a bit of unfinished business, but this is a second chance for me to do more and achieve those goals."

Matsheke will wear the No. 31 jersey and could feature against Kruger United on Saturday.
