Desiree Ellis pleased as Banyana wrap up perfect Algeria test

After edging the first encounter 1-0 earlier in the week at Princess Magogo Stadium, the hosts completed a deserved double, showcasing both depth and defensive solidity as preparations for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations gather pace.

The breakthrough came in the 58th minute through Nthabiseng Majiya, who continued her fine form by netting her second goal in as many matches. With the game seemingly heading for a narrow finish, second-half substitute Shakira O'Malley sealed the result late on, striking four minutes from time to put the result beyond doubt.

Head coach Desiree Ellis made six changes to her starting line-up, rotating heavily as she assessed her squad. The inclusion of players such as Kaylin Swart, Sinegugu Zondi, Karabo Dhlamini, Nonhlanhla Mthandi, Gabriela Moodaly-Salgado and Bonolo Mokoma underlined the technical team's intent to test combinations and build squad depth.

Ellis was pleased with what she saw, particularly the team's organisation and defensive discipline, with South Africa managing to keep clean sheets across both fixtures despite utilising all three goalkeepers.

"It's always good to win, but the main objective was to test the players and see where we are," Ellis was quoted on SAFA.net.

"The team looked well balanced, and it's encouraging to see players perform as if they've been together for a long time."

There was also a personal milestone for Karabo Dhlamini, who marked her 50th international cap in the clash.

Banyana will next face Japan women's national football team in two friendlies in Osaka in June, continuing their build-up to WAFCON.
