Durban City cite strategic differences in parting ways with Sinethemba Badela

The KZN club emphasized that the decision was not due to results or a lack of professionalism.

"Following a comprehensive internal review, the club concluded that the time required to fully embed coach Badela's modern footballing philosophy was not compatible with the immediate pressures of the current season," the club said in a statement on Monday. With 13 critical fixtures remaining, Durban City stressed the need for experience, operational readiness, and short-term stability to navigate the challenges on and off the pitch.

Badela's short tenure at Durban City began in December 2025, after succeeding Gavin Hunt. In just three games, he led the team to two wins—including a 1-0 league victory over Polokwane City—and one loss to Chippa United. The side also advanced to the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup following a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout win over Chippa after a 0-0 draw.

The club highlighted Badela's contribution in introducing a modern footballing philosophy and cultivating a strong, values-driven culture, noting that his approach aligned with Durban City's long-term vision and developmental objectives. "This decision is not a reflection of match results, nor does it detract from the professionalism, dedication, and commitment demonstrated by coach Badela during his tenure," the statement read.

Badela, who previously had a two-game stint at Chippa United and served as assistant coach to Rhulani Mokwena at Wydad Casablanca, leaves the club as interim coaching arrangements and plans to recruit a new head coach are set to be announced. Durban City reaffirmed their commitment to building a "strong, competitive, and proudly Durban football institution" while thanking supporters and partners for their continued loyalty.
