Enzo Fernandez focused on Chelsea finish as Real Madrid links persist

The Argentina international, currently away on international duty, dismissed reports of contact with Real Madrid, stressing that no discussions have taken place. Speaking after linking up with his national team, Fernandez made it clear that any decisions about his future will be parked until later.

"Nothing, zero talks," he said. "I'm focused on Chelsea, what's left of the season. After the World Cup, we'll see."

While his stance shuts down suggestions of an imminent move, it stops short of offering full commitment to Chelsea, leaving open the possibility of a decision once international obligations are complete.

Fernandez's situation comes against the backdrop of a turbulent season at Stamford Bridge. Despite his own consistent performances, Chelsea have struggled for stability, with Liam Rosenior becoming the latest managerial appointment following Enzo Maresca's mid-season departure. The Argentine has now worked under multiple coaches in a short period, a factor that has contributed to an unsettled environment at the club.

Results have done little to ease the tension. A string of heavy defeats, including exits from European competition and dropped points in the league, has left Chelsea battling to secure a top-four finish. The inconsistency has only intensified speculation that key players could consider their options.

Even so, Rosenior has publicly backed Fernandez's commitment, maintaining that the midfielder remains settled and engaged. The 25-year-old still has a long-term contract, signed after his record-breaking move in 2023, which ties him to the club for several more years.

Fernandez himself has also spoken positively about his current situation, though he admitted the disruption caused by managerial changes has had an impact on the squad. His measured responses suggest a player carefully weighing his next move rather than rushing into any decision.

Adding another layer to the situation is the question of his contract. Reports indicate Fernandez could be seeking improved terms, with his current deal structured in line with Chelsea's revised wage model - one that prioritises performance-based incentives over high guaranteed salaries. While designed to maintain balance within the squad, such a system can leave players open to offers from clubs willing to provide more lucrative fixed packages.

For now, however, Fernandez's priority remains on the pitch. He is set to feature for Argentina in upcoming friendlies after the planned Finalissima clash was cancelled, a disappointment he admitted he had hoped to be part of.

"Obviously, I would have liked to play it," he said. "It's a final and representing my country in those games is always special. Hopefully, it can happen in the future."

As the season enters its closing stages, Fernandez appears content to let events unfold before making any firm decisions. His message is clear - no talks, no distractions - but beyond that, his future remains very much undecided.
