Florian Wirtz: Liverpool's season was revived by important squad meetings

The Merseyside club endured a troubling run between late September and November, losing nine of their 12 matches across competitions.

The poor sequence raised concerns about the direction of the season under manager Arne Slot, but the squad responded by holding internal discussions aimed at addressing their problems.

Wirtz revealed that the meetings played a key role in stabilising the team's performances and rebuilding confidence within the dressing room.

Since that period, Liverpool have shown a marked improvement in form, suffering just three defeats in their last 23 matches across all competitions.

The German midfielder discussed the situation during an appearance on the club's Reds' Roundtable show on Liverpool's official channels.

Teammates Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili also took part in the discussion, with the players explaining how open conversations within the squad helped drive better performances and results on the pitch.

"There were a few meetings in the changing room with only us players," Wirtz said.

"We had a difficult start and this club and this team was not used to this, that we don't win almost every game, you know?

"And I think it was important to believe as a group, that we are making process and it needs to go better.

"Us, as a team, we want to give the fans something, but we are not in the position to say: 'We are winning this or that'. So we focus on the games, but we know that there's still something to play for.

"Most what I did was just to make myself strong in the head to bring myself to the best position to bring it on the pitch and that helped also. It was really good to start scoring and from then on it was easier to find the goal more.

"I can't even explain why because in football I think it's a lot of momentum and when you score one time, then you can use it for yourself you know."

Liverpool's revival has kept them competitive on multiple fronts. The club currently sits sixth in the Premier League standings and has progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Attention now turns to European competition, where Liverpool will face Galatasaray in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, with the first leg set to be played away in Istanbul on Tuesday night.
