Ghana extend Black Stars coaching deadline as search for Queiroz successor continues

Ghana extend Black Stars coaching deadline as search for Queiroz successor continues

The GFA confirmed that an interim technical team would oversee preparations for Ghana’s November 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers while the recruitment process remains ongoing, Modern Ghana reported.

The decision follows Queiroz’s departure after Ghana suffered a disappointing start to their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, leaving the four-time African champions under pressure to revive their hopes of reaching the tournament.

According to the GFA, the extension was agreed upon in consultation with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Black Stars Coach Search Committee.

The committee will continue evaluating applications, conducting interviews and shortlisting candidates throughout October and November before submitting its final recommendation.

The association said the extended process would allow for a thorough assessment of candidates, with technical ability, leadership, cultural understanding and high-performance standards among the key considerations.

Ghana’s coaching search comes after consecutive defeats in their opening Group C qualifying matches in September.

The Black Stars suffered a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast in Bouaké before going down 4-2 against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Those results left Ghana without a point after two matches and at the bottom of the group, increasing the pressure on the team to turn their campaign around.

Having missed the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, Ghana are determined to avoid another absence from the continental showpiece in 2027.

The GFA said the interim arrangement would allow preparations for the November fixtures to continue without disrupting the recruitment process.

Ghana are scheduled to face Somalia as they attempt to collect crucial points and improve their position in the qualifying campaign.

The association added that its objective was to appoint a coach capable of establishing a stronger football identity and laying the foundation for sustained success.

Although no specific appointment date has been announced, the committee is expected to complete its evaluation process before recommending a candidate to lead the national team.

The GFA has also called on supporters, former players, football stakeholders and the media to support the search as it seeks to strengthen the long-term direction of Ghanaian football.
