Salah brought an end to his hugely successful nine-year stay at Liverpool following the Reds' 1-1 draw against Brentford F.C. in their final Premier League fixture of the 2025/26 season.
Despite cementing his place among Liverpool's greatest-ever players, Salah's final months at Anfield were overshadowed by inconsistent performances and reported tensions with manager Arne Slot.
The winger also became a frequent talking point in the English media amid frustrations over his reduced influence during the closing stages of the campaign.
Speaking to Sky Sports, as reported by Africanfootball and the Liverpool Echo, Souness admitted he was disappointed by how Salah handled the latter part of his Liverpool career.
"I think Salah is a major problem. I'm a bit disappointed in him with the way he's left. It's all about him, the way he has left. It has been all about him," said Souness.
The former Liverpool captain added that he first noticed signs of decline early in the season, pointing to the Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace at Wembley.
"He should have gone gracefully and he's not done that. I was at the Community Shield at the start of the season and saw him play at Wembley against Crystal Palace and he was not very good in that game, and that is the sort of season he has had," he added.
Souness further suggested Salah struggled to accept that his best years may be behind him, accusing the Egyptian star of unfairly dragging Slot into the spotlight during Liverpool's difficult moments.
"He is a great player and will go down in history as a great player. But I just think he's let himself down in the way he's conducted himself leaving Liverpool."
