Hansi Flick reflects on Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid exit ahead of Copa del Rey clash

Alonso, whose tenure lasted just seven months, was replaced by former Madrid player Alvaro Arbeloa.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday's Copa del Rey last-16 tie against Racing Santander, Flick said he has a "very good relationship" with Alonso, whom he first met during his time with the German national team in Leverkusen.

"At Real Madrid, they have made their decision, but it's not my business," Flick said. "The job of a coach is very complicated, with a lot of responsibility. You have to accept these things in football, and I wish Xabi all the best. He's a fantastic coach and has a bright future ahead of him."

Flick praised the culture at Barcelona, reflecting on the trust and support he has received from president Joan Laporta, the club's staff, and players. "From my first hours here, I felt we were working together as one big family. It's something special, and I value what we've built," he said.

The German manager also addressed his own strong record against Real Madrid, having won five of six meetings and four Super Cup titles in direct encounters with the club. Flick acknowledged that his recent success has endeared him to the fans but emphasized that his focus remains on the next challenge.

"Tomorrow will be an important match against Racing, a team that beat Villarreal and are doing really well in the Segunda. As Barcelona players, you have to give everything on the pitch," he added.

On squad selection, Flick indicated that second-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen would not start against Racing, with Joan Garcia continuing in goal due to his impressive form.

Meanwhile, Arbeloa will make his managerial debut for Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey against Albacete, inheriting a team still reeling from the Super Cup defeat. Flick's comments underline the unpredictable nature of football management, while expressing optimism for Alonso's next steps in the coaching world.
