Hugo Ekitike chose Liverpool over Man Utd because it was the 'best option'

The 23-year-old Frenchman arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt for 69 million GBP, with a further 10 million in potential add-ons, following intense interest across the Premier League.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle were among the clubs monitoring him, with United's pursuit driven by manager Ruben Amorim's desire to bring in a new striker.

However, the Red Devils eventually settled for Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, who has scored just once since his arrival.

Ekitike had established himself as a prolific finisher in Germany, scoring 22 goals in 48 games for Frankfurt after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

His decision to join Liverpool has already been vindicated, with the forward netting five goals in his first eight appearances under Jürgen Klopp.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's UEFA Champions League trip to Galatasaray, Ekitike admitted the Reds' footballing project convinced him.

"Liverpool are Premier League champions, with great players and great history," he said when asked why he chose the Reds amid interest from United.

"I think it was a good choice for me and that's why I chose Liverpool as it was the best option and I wanted to come."
