Richarlison nets late equaliser against Liverpool at Anfield to hand troubled Tottenham a lifeline

Richarlison netted a 90th minute equaliser after Dominik Szoboszlai had put the hosts ahead with a superb free kick after 18 minutes.

The result left Spurs in 16th place on the Premier League standings with 30 points from 30 games, just one clear of West Ham in the drop zone.

Liverpool, meanwhile, missed out on the chance to move up to fourth place, sitting one place back in fifth on 49 points from 30 games, five adrift of Manchester United in third place.

A defensive Tottenham opening meant that the first real chance of the tie arrived after ten minutes with Cody Gakpo doing well to make a yard for himself on the edge of the box, only to fire his shot over the crossbar.

Reds' stopper Alisson was then forced to block a long-range effort from Souza as the away team looked to break the Liverpool block.

But that was as good as it was to get for Spurs in the opening period, as Spurs stopper Vicario was beaten by a superb Szoboszlai set-post inside the opening 20 minutes.

Ryan Gravenberch should have done better with his finish after a superb solo run soon after, while Gakpo's measured shot on the 36-minute mark came back off the left-hand upright.

Liverpool ended the half strongly, but Richarlison was guilty of a real chance to head his side into the half-time break level pegging when he somehow put the ball wide of the mark when it looked easier to score.

Rio Ngumoha then thought he had scored after the restart after a thrilling run through the Spurs defence, but he could only pull his shot wide at full speed.

Richarlison then blew a big chance to draw level from close range, although credit must go to Alisson for an excellent save.

The Brazilian striker was in again, this with 68 minutes played, and produced a ferocious strike from the edge of the box, that was again denied by an outstretched Alisson, who pulled off a superb save to keep the ball out of the net.

Mohamed Salah started the game on bench and was introduced for Jeremie Frimpong just past the hour mark.

It took mere seconds for the Egyptian to get involved, and his first shot was blocked on its way to goal before a second - on the half volley - was smashed barely an inch past Vicario's left post.

Djed Spence couldn't beat Alisson with his effort down the middle of the goal, and Szoboszlai couldn't find the target when he fired goalward with five minutes of the match remaining.

There was a small measure of belief that Spurs could find a late equaliser, after the introduction of Randal Kolo Muani, on for Mathys Tel with 15 minutes of the game to play.

And it was the fresh legs of Muani that made all the difference as he teed up Richarlison inside the box, and after numerous wasted chances, the striker finally kept his cool to find the bottom left corner of the net.
