Jude Bellingham emerges as Real Madrid's cornerstone, says Alvaro Arbeloa

Bellingham, who endured a slow start to the 2025-26 season following shoulder surgery last summer, has recently shown glimpses of his exceptional quality. The England international scored in last week's 6-1 rout of Monaco, underlining his importance in Arbeloa's new-look side.

"From day one, I've seen a player with exceptional quality and abilities," Arbeloa said at a press conference on Tuesday. "Anyone who's seen him on television knows it, but up close, it's even more surprising. Beyond his footballing talent, he wants to be a leader, a role model. His performance in training, his commitment, and leadership make me very proud to have a player like Jude Bellingham."

The 22-year-old midfielder has contributed four goals in 17 LaLiga matches this season, alongside two goals in six Champions League appearances. Despite some criticism from fans earlier in the season following the sacking of former manager Xabi Alonso, Bellingham has handled the attention with composure. After scoring against Monaco, he celebrated with a gesture aimed at online rumours about his personal life. "I know the truth, I know what really goes on in my personal life, and I know what I give to the game and the team. All the outside noise doesn't really matter," he told TNT Sports.

Arbeloa has also been effusive about the wider squad, highlighting the players' commitment and adaptability since his arrival earlier this month. "I've seen a group of very committed players, willing to listen and work hard. They're putting what we've discussed into practice," he said. "We still have room for improvement, but the effort and attitude the players are showing is commendable, especially under a new manager in such a short space of time."

Looking ahead, Real Madrid will face Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday. A win would secure the club's place in the knockout stage, reinforcing the momentum Arbeloa has sought to build. On Bellingham, the coach added: "He's young but has a wealth of experience. On the pitch, he makes runs into space, reads the game, and has a great shot. Jude Bellingham is going to be the cornerstone of this Real Madrid for many, many years."
