Kaizer Chiefs' new coach Fernando Da Cruz targets 'winning culture'

The French coach officially began his new role at Naturena ahead of the 2026/27 season, taking charge of a Chiefs side looking to improve on last season's third-place finish in the Betway Premiership and make a strong impression in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Da Cruz, who previously served as an assistant coach under Nasreddine Nabi, said he was delighted to be back at the Soweto giants and eager to help restore the club to the top.

"I’m very happy to be here," he said.

"The club has always held a special place in my heart, and I’ve kept a close eye on its journey over the past two years. Kaizer Chiefs is a massive institution with passionate supporters and a proud history.

"My focus now is on building a strong connection with the players, instilling a winning mentality, and working together to achieve the success our fans deserve.

"The journey ahead will demand hard work and unity, but I’m confident we will rise to the challenge."

Da Cruz also addressed the squad during one of his first training sessions, making it clear that changing the team's mindset will be central to his plans.

"I am excited to get started," he told the players.

"I understand what this club stands for, its history and its future. I think we need to create the new ambition for the club.

"It is a big team in Africa, and we want to win with a good attitude and mentality. We must work hard and go step by step."

Chiefs will head into the new campaign hoping to build on the progress made last season under their previous coaching staff. The club is expected to compete for domestic honours while also challenging on the continental stage in the CAF Confederation Cup.
