Over the years, the award has been won by some of the greatest forwards the game has ever produced, including Ronaldo, Gerd Muller, Eusebio and Miroslav Klose.
Although FIFA has recorded the tournament's top scorer since the first World Cup in 1930, the official trophy was only introduced in 1982 in partnership with Adidas. It was originally known as the Golden Shoe before being renamed the Golden Boot in 2010. FIFA now officially recognises every previous top scorer as a Golden Boot winner.
Winning the award is rarely straightforward. If two or more players finish level on goals, FIFA first looks at assists. If they are still tied, the player who reached the total in fewer minutes is declared the winner. Silver and Bronze Boots are also awarded to the second and third-highest scorers.
The first winner and the greatest scoring record
Argentina's Guillermo Stabile became the first World Cup Golden Boot winner in 1930 after scoring eight goals. Remarkably, he missed his country's opening match and only entered the team because of an injury to a teammate. He then announced himself with a hat-trick on his debut before finishing as the tournament's leading scorer.
The all-time World Cup scoring record for a single tournament still belongs to France's Just Fontaine, who scored an incredible 13 goals in only six matches at the 1958 World Cup. Fontaine even wore borrowed boots after his own pair was damaged. His record has never been broken, with Gerd Muller coming close by scoring 10 goals for West Germany in 1970 and Kylian Mbappe of France reached 10 in 2026.
Tie-breakers decide close races
In the early years of the World Cup, players who finished level on goals shared the award. That happened in 1962 when six players each scored four goals, and again in 1994 when Oleg Salenko and Hristo Stoichkov both finished with six.
FIFA later introduced tie-breakers to ensure there is only one Golden Boot winner. Assists are used first, followed by the fewest minutes played if players remain level.
That rule proved decisive at the 2010 World Cup. Germany's Thomas Muller, Spain's David Villa, Netherlands star Wesley Sneijder and Uruguay striker Diego Forlan all scored five goals. Muller lifted the Golden Boot after providing three assists, more than any of his rivals.
Mbappe writes another chapter in history
Kylian Mbappe strengthened his place among the game's greatest World Cup goalscorers by winning the Golden Boot for a second consecutive tournament in 2026. He also scored eight goals in the 2022 World Cup.
The France captain finished with 10 goals after scoring twice in France's dramatic 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place play-off. That left Argentina captain Lionel Messi needing at least a hat-trick in the final against Spain to overtake him.
Spain's defence, however, kept Messi quiet throughout the final before securing a 1-0 extra-time victory. Messi finished the tournament with eight goals, while Mbappe became the first player since the award was officially recognised to win back-to-back Golden Boots.

Africa's Greatest World Cup Goalscorers
African football has produced some unforgettable World Cup moments, with several players leaving a lasting mark on the tournament. Ghana's Asamoah Gyan remains Africa's leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history with six goals, while Morocco is the continent's highest-scoring nation with 30 goals overall.
Gyan scored in three consecutive World Cups between 2006 and 2014, becoming one of Africa's most consistent performers on football's biggest stage. Behind him is Cameroon legend Roger Milla, whose five World Cup goals included his famous strike against Russia in 1994 when he became the oldest goalscorer in tournament history at 42 years old.
Senegal forward Ismaila Sarr has also climbed into the history books with five World Cup goals, while Nigeria's Ahmed Musa sits on four after scoring memorable braces against Argentina in 2014 and Iceland in 2018.
Several other African stars have scored three World Cup goals, including Senegal hero Papa Bouba Diop, who famously netted the winner against defending champions France in the opening match of the 2002 tournament. Cameroon great Samuel Eto'o, Tunisia captain Wahbi Khazri, Morocco striker Youssef En-Nesyri and Ghana captain Andre Ayew have also made their mark on the global stage.
