Brahim Diaz eyes starting spot in star-studded Real Madrid line-up
Brahim Diaz has set his sights on securing a regular starting role at Real Madrid, expressing his ambition to shine among the world's elite players.
The 39-year-old Croatian midfielder, who is preparing to leave Real Madrid after 13 trophy-laden years, is set to sign a one-year contract with Milan, with an option to extend for a second season. Sources told ESPN the deal will be worth around 3.5 million euros per year, plus performance-based bonuses.
"I spoke to him in person and saw a player still full of ambition," Tare told Gazzetta dello Sport. "The first thing he asked was whether the team is being built to win the league. That's his mentality - he wants to compete at the highest level and lead by example."
Modric is expected to bring valuable leadership and experience to a Milan squad aiming to re-establish itself as a consistent title contender in Serie A. Tare also revealed that Modric has supported the club since childhood, adding an emotional element to the deal.
"He's important for what he brings in terms of mentality, leadership and professionalism. And the fact he's a Milan fan makes this story even more special," Tare said.
The agreement was reportedly finalized earlier in June, shortly before the Club World Cup began. Modric is expected to formally sign his contract after Croatia's involvement in the tournament concludes.
Modric is targeting regular first-team football to stay sharp ahead of what could be his final major international tournament - the 2026 World Cup, also set to be held in the United States.
In a further boost to their midfield rebuild, Milan have also agreed personal terms with Bayer Leverkusen's Granit Xhaka, sources told ESPN. However, negotiations over a transfer fee are still ongoing.
Modric leaves Real Madrid as one of the most decorated players in the club's history, having won 28 major trophies, including six Champions League titles and three La Liga titles. Despite turning 40 in September, the veteran playmaker remains fully fit and eager to compete at the highest level.
Should the deal be finalized as expected, Modric will become the latest high-profile addition to a Milan side aiming to recapture domestic and European success in the coming seasons.
