Mamelodi Sundowns bow out of Club World Cup after Fluminense draw

The South African champions needed a win to advance to the round of 16 but were unable to break down a disciplined Fluminense side, who progress instead.

Head coach Rulani Mokwena named an unchanged starting XI from the 4-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, while Fluminense opted to rest veteran centre-back Thiago Silva.

Sundowns started brightly and nearly opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Tashreeq Matthews struck a first-time effort from the far side of the box, but Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio produced a sharp save. Moments later, Divine Lunga forced another stop from Fabio with a low drive at the near post.

The Brazilian side struggled to impose themselves early but grew into the game. Their best first-half chance came midway through when Inacio glanced a header just wide from a corner. Shortly after the first-half water break, Jhon Arias created danger on the flank but could only fire across the face of goal.

After the break, Sundowns made their first change, with Jayden Adams replacing Teboho Mokoena in midfield. The match's tempo remained high, though clear chances were few.

Fluminense nearly took the lead 10 minutes into the second half when German Cano beat Keanu Cupido to a near-post delivery and fired against the outside of the upright. Cupido sustained an injury during the play and was replaced by Mosa Lebusa.

Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but the game descended into a midfield battle marked by heavy challenges and quick turnovers. Despite their attacking intent late on, Sundowns couldn't find the breakthrough they needed.

The result sees Fluminense progress to the last 16, while Sundowns - who exit the tournament with one win, a draw and one loss from their three group-stage matches - can hold their heads high for exceeding expectations on the world stage.
