Muzomuhle Khanyi's midweek match-winner boosts Stellenbosch ahead of CAF clash

The 26-year-old striker, who joined Stellies from Hungry Lions at the start of the season, came off the bench to score the match-winning goal in Wednesday night's 4-3 Betway Premiership victory over Golden Arrows at Athlone Stadium.

Khanyi timed his run to perfection to meet Ibraheem Jabaar's clever pass before calmly slotting home to seal a thrilling win for the Cape side.

"It's such a good feeling to score my first goal for Stellenbosch and to make that kind of impact off the bench," Khanyi told the club's website.

"To do it at home, in front of our supporters, made it even more special. It's something I'll always be proud of."

Khanyi admitted that the team had struggled for goals in recent matches but believes Wednesday's performance showed what Stellies' attack is capable of when they take their chances.

"We've been through a tough spell in front of goal, but this game reminded us what we can do collectively. We're not happy to have conceded three, but getting the win was important," he added.

Having joined the club on the back of a Golden Boot-winning season in the National First Division, Khanyi is eager to prove he can replicate that form at top-flight level.

"There was pressure coming in as the NFD top scorer. But I'm learning from experienced guys like Andre De Jong and Bradley Mojela. I just have to keep working and show my character, the striker concluded.

Stellenbosch will now turn their focus to CAF Confederation Cup duty when they host 15 de Agosto in the decisive second leg of their final preliminary round clash at Athlone Stadium on Sunday, following a goalless draw in the first leg.
