Paul Onuachu hails healthy rivalry with Victor Osimhen after Turkish Golden Boot triumph

He insists their battle for the Turkish Super Lig Golden Boot has only strengthened their friendship and motivated them to improve.

Onuachu finished as the Turkish Super Lig's top scorer for the 2025/26 season, edging out Osimhen to claim the Golden Boot just a year after the Galatasaray forward won the award in his debut campaign in Turkey.

Rather than creating tension between the Super Eagles teammates, Onuachu believes their competition has been a positive force for both players.

Speaking to Turkish publication 61 Saat, as reported by Pulse Sports Nigeria, the 32-year-old dismissed suggestions of any personal rivalry.

"There will always be competition. Competition adds something to you," Onuachu said.

"There are important strikers like Osimhen in the league. Last year I managed to become the top scorer."

The former Southampton forward revealed that he and Osimhen regularly celebrate each other's achievements despite competing for individual honours.

"We both congratulate each other. When one of us achieves success, we congratulate each other. I called and spoke to them when they won the league," he said.

"It's a good thing to play and compete with someone from the same country. When he wins, I congratulate him, and when I win, he congratulates me."

Osimhen set the benchmark for strikers in Turkey by winning the Golden Boot during Galatasaray's title-winning 2024/25 campaign, but Onuachu responded in style by claiming the award the following season.

With both forwards expected to remain at their respective clubs, the friendly competition between two of Nigeria's most prolific strikers looks set to continue, promising another exciting race for goals in the Turkish Super Lig while benefiting the Super Eagles ahead of future international assignments.
