Ronwen Williams: Sundowns eager to lift new CAF Champions League trophy
A brand-new CAF Champions League trophy was unveiled in Johannesburg on Thursday, just days before the highly anticipated final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Pyramids FC.
Traditionally held in June following the conclusion of the domestic season, this year's ceremony will be delayed to a later date, yet to be announced. The decision comes as Sundowns prepare for a crucial Champions League semi-final clash against Egypt's Pyramids FC at Loftus Versfeld this weekend. Should they progress, the final is scheduled for June 1.
Shortly after their continental campaign, the Betway Premiership champions will shift their focus to the global stage, traveling to the United States for the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off from June 14 to July 13.
"In recent seasons, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Awards Ceremony has traditionally been held during the month of June," read the official PSL statement. "However, due to Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club's participation in both the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2024/25 CAF Champions League Final, the League has taken the decision to postpone this season's PSL Awards Ceremony.
"The PSL, its Member Clubs, and all stakeholders in professional football across the country are united in their support for Mamelodi Sundowns as they fly the flag for South African football at these prestigious events.
"The new date and further details for the rescheduled ceremony will be communicated in due course. For now, all eyes remain on Masandawana as they aim to bring continental and international success back to South Africa.
