The Reds have tabled a fresh offer of 113 million pounds for the 22-year-old, but Leverkusen are holding firm, demanding closer to 126 million pounds to part with their talisman.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are closing in on a deal. Romano posted on X, "Liverpool are advancing to complete Wirtz deal in next days, here we go soon. Negotiations at final stages with details being sorted then Wirtz will travel for medical, plan confirmed."
However, sources indicate the latest bid, comprising 100 million pounds guaranteed and 13 million pounds in performance-related bonuses, still falls short of Leverkusen's valuation, with the Bundesliga side rejecting three previous offers, including one worth 109 million pounds.
BILD reported that talks between the clubs are progressing, with an agreement considered likely in the coming days.
Despite this optimism, Liverpool remain reluctant to meet Leverkusen's full asking price for the Bundesliga Player of the Year, who has two years left on his contract.
Wirtz, who notched 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 appearances last season, has expressed a clear desire to join Liverpool, rejecting interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester City, per David Ornstein of The Athletic.
Complicating matters, a potential legal dispute looms over the transfer. Cologne, Wirtz's former club, are entitled to five percent of the transfer fee under FIFA's training compensation rules, which apply to players moving between ages 12 and 23.
Cologne president Dr. Werner Wolf told Radio Cologne, "We know what we are entitled to and will fight for it. The higher the sum Liverpool are willing to pay, the better for us."
While this issue is unlikely to derail the deal, it could delay finalization as Liverpool aim to bolster Arne Slot's squad.
Liverpool have already secured Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong for 29.5 million pounds this summer, and landing Wirtz would smash their transfer record, surpassing the 115 million pounds Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo.
Fans are buzzing, with Anfield Sector posting on X, "Florian Wirtz is going to Liverpool. The deal is almost closed. They're negotiating the last details." If completed, Wirtz's arrival would mark a bold statement of intent from the Premier League champions.
