Rulani Mokwena praises Wydad ahead of anticipated exit

Mokwena has come under criticism this season despite his side sitting in third place on the league standings.

They were recently eliminated in the round of 16 of the Moroccan Throne Cup with a 1-0 defeat to Moghreb Tetouan, while they recorded a sixth league consecutive draw with a 1-1 stalemate with eighth-placed OC Safi on Wednesday.

The result left Wydad on 45 points from 27 games, six points behind second-placed AS FAR with just three games of the season remaining and in danger of missing out on CAF Champions League qualification.

League leaders RS Berkane already have the title wrapped up with 60 points from 26 games.

Mokwena previously said he will depart Wydad when the season concludes but speaking after his most recent draw, explained the final decision will be made by President Hicham Ait Menna.

He said on iDiski Times: "It's up to the president, I already said at the end of the season I will leave, so that's the situation.

"I love Wydad, I will only coach Wydad in Morocco, if I leave, I leave as a Wydad. When you say 'Dima Wydad', you say 'Dima Wydad' forever, and just to thank the president, he's been amazing.

"I think Wydad has the best president in Morocco, maybe in Africa. The players have given me everything of the best, the staff has been good.

“Wydad is a big club, you know they deserve to win, and maybe they deserve a better coach than me.”
